How to Have a Happy Day by Doing One Thing

Alarm goes off, hit snooze, finally get out of bed, make coffee/tea, shower and then scramble about the morning trying to get ready to start your day and then your whole day is poopy, chaotic and stressful. I’m gonna ease your burden and pain today and tell you how to have a happy day by doing one thing.

I get that our lives are busy. Oh how I get that. Run around, feed your family, take care of errands, go to work for 8-10 hours a day, meal prep, gym if you have time…it’s nonstop right? You do everything in your power to not lose your cool and try to stay optimistic and happy.

And then what happens at bedtime? Do you fall into bed in a heap exhausted from the chaos and stress from the whole day? Pillow propped up, remote control in hand and click through channels mindlessly until you fall asleep?

Man you’re doing this whole morning/evening routine thing wrong. I’m gonna show you in one simple step how to have a happy day. Every day.

You’re not even gonna believe how easy it is to change your entire day and have a happier day. Seriously. Once I tell you you’re going to say “OMG is that it??” Yup.

And then you’re gonna come up with a million reasons and excuses why you CAN’T do this. And I’ll call bulls**t on all of them now.

Take time for you. Just you.

That’s it. That’s the single one simple thing for how to have a happy day. Sounds pretty easy peasy right?

Be it meditate or sit quietly with your morning beverage or even in the evening soak in the tub with some candles and a nice glass of wine or your favourite drink, or even stand in the hot shower for 5 minutes. Whatever it is that you have time to do, do it.

We start our days with like a firecracker, explosive and go go go and end our days in a frazzled heap but when did you stop and take some time, just for you?

Here’s why it’s so important to do this one thing that will help you not only become a calmer and happier person, but also help you love yourself more and of course, help you have a happier day!

Self care is extremely important

Every day we hustle and bustle about with commitments. Work, family, errands, you name it, we’re hustling. Some of us have 18 hour days and only get in 6 hours of sleep. In that 18 hours (or however many hours you have in your day) we run around in a frenzy doing something for everyone else but neglect ourselves.

Not only all that, but so many of us still think self care is selfish! No no no no.!!

Let’s clear up one common misconception from the get-go: Self-care is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish. Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day.

You literally are required to take care of yourself. It’s mandatory!! If you don’t take care of you, who will? Don’t expect others to do that for you. Not for your emotional well being anyway.

How to make a schedule for yourself

How long can we do this for? How long can we keep up this ridiculous daily routine until we crash? Yes crash because inevitably, that’s what will happen.

But the bigger question here is, why aren’t you carving out time for yourself? Don’t you matter? Aren’t you more important than anything else in the whole wide world (yes even more important than your children, family, etc)? Of course you are.

You are number ONE and you need to take care of YOU first before you can take care of anyone else. You  matter the most.

Your health, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual, are of the utmost importance. You know the expression but I’m gonna say it here. You can’t pour from an empty cup. You just can’t.

You need to figure out how to make a schedule for yourself that will allow you to still get your chores and work done yet also allows you to have time for yourself.

If you need to get up a smidgen earlier in the morning then do so. Or maybe you can just let everyone in the house know you are taking a time out in the evening.

Whatever it is that you need to do, do it. It’s time for you. I would recommend either taking some time in the morning or later on in the evening. Whenever you do take your self care time, make sure you do loving self care things.

Here are a few ideas you might like:

  • journal
  • meditate
  • hot bubbly bathwith herbal tea (or wine)
  • pray
  • call a friend
  • write a letter to a friend
  • give yourselfa mani/pedi
  • the possibilities are endless.

How to find self happiness

Imagine your body, mind and soul is a vessel that needs to be well fed, watered and fueled up to stay running and healthy. Now imagine what happens to this vessel when there’s no water, food or fuel to keep it running. It dies.

But not only does it not perform properly, it has low energy and becomes sad. You need to fill it back up with happy things. Want to know how to find self happiness?

Find things to do that bring your heart joy, light your soul on fire, make you sing and put a little skip in your step. You need to stop doing so much for other people all the time and start doing things for yourself. Fill your cup first babe.

Remember you are a vessel that needs to be cared for, just like anyone else. Take care of your vessel first and then you will be more prepared, and better prepared, to take care of all the other vessels around you. The one thing you need to do each and every day is put yourself first, no matter how hard it is.

It’s time for you to start saying NO to others, NO to people pleasing and YES to yourself and your own happiness. Stop trying to be the person who does everything all the time for everyone and never does anything for themselves. What’s the point of that??

This isn’t just about how to have a happy day but it’s also about taking the steps needed in order to have a happier life.
