4 Things That Will Cheer You Up Next Time You Are Feeling Sad

Last Updated on 3 years by Iva Ursano

Yup. They say laughter is the best medicine. It is, sort of. I agree with that. I mean, who doesn’t want to let out a good belly laugh in the middle of an uncomfortable situation? Laughter certainly has cured lots of ailments I’ve had over the years, especially when I’m feeling sad.

It’s not the only medicine available to you though.

I think there are other *medicines* that don’t get as much, or enough, attention as laughter that, in my opinion, are just as effective, if not more.

Now I imagine it all depends on what ailment it is you are looking to cure, right? What have you been using laughter to cure these days? My troubles, lately, seem to be all boy related (boys are dumb) and I can always count on my bff Jen to talk me off the ledge and make me laugh.

The difference between feeling sad and depression

Before we get into the 4 quick fixes for sadness you have to know the difference between depression and feeling sad. When you are sad, you have to understand that this is a temporary emotion that can usually be remedied by either the tips I give you below or other means.

Sometimes it’s hanging out with a good friend for an afternoon or maybe reading a good book or listening to some uplifting music.

But depression, though can be temporary, is not as easily remedied as sadness. Here are a few signs of depression. If you recognize yourself in any of these please reach out for help.

Please also note there are many forms of depression. This site WebMD is a wealth of knowledge and you may want to check it out for further information on depression.

Signs of depression:

  • anxious or sad all the time
  • constantly irritable even over the littlest simplest things
  • feeling of hopelessness or helplessness that won’t go away
  • low to no appetite
  • no desire to do things you used to love doing
  • lack of focus
  • trouble sleeping

When you’re feeling sad for no reason

Does that ever happen to you? You wake up one morning and for some unknown reason you feel like you have this sadness pit in your stomach? No clue where it came from. No clue why it’s there.

This happens to me every now and then and to be honest, I think even the happiest of people will feel this sometimes. I mean, let’s face it, you can’t wake up smiley and cheery every damn day.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why you are feeling sad. Was it a bad dream? Something you ate the night before you went to bed? Who knows. Point is, you still have to honour those feelings too.

Don’t waste time trying to figure it out, just feel it, and know that this is only temporary and it will soon go away. The 4 tips below will help you get through it as well.

4 things to do next time you are feeling sadPin

Here are 4 other things to do when you are feeling sad.

Try any or all of these 4 things next time you are feeling sad. If you have any tricks that helped you, drop them in the comments below and share with other readers! Remember sharing is caring.

1 Crying

Yup. Does this surprise you? I bet not. Crying has always been my number 1 go to medicine when I’m freaking out or in an emotional bind. And I’m a damn good crier too. I’m probably one of the most sensitive people you will ever meet.

The one who cries at commercials on TV (when I used to watch TV), when I hear of happy things or sad things, my heart has this line connected to my tear ducts I think, I dunno, but I like to cry.

I’m especially great at crying when stuff has gone bad and I feel lost. I can have a good cry for 5 minutes, sometimes half the day, and then when I’m done, I feel like a million bucks.

Yup. Just like that. The benefits to this also are that it’s free, you can do it in private or with friends and it’s a great way to detox.

2 Get mad

For real. Do it. If anyone tells you to calm down tell them to shut up. You need to scream and yell. You need to vent and let all that anger out.

You have to release whatever it is inside of you that’s been boiling and stewing all day or week or month or year (God help you if you’ve been holding onto that stuff for a year though).

Getting mad is a great medicine that, once taken/or done, you will have removed the weight of the world from your shoulders. You can’t go wrong there.

Please don’t ever direct your anger to a person or hurt anyone while you’re in the throes of anger. Try to find a place to do it alone, scream into a pillow, go stand on top of a mountain, do whatever it takes to get it out, just don’t hurt people while you’re doing it.

3 Dear John/Jane

Truth letters are, by far, the most powerful medicine out there and all it takes really is either a pen and pad of paper or your computer/notepad (whatever).

Write out your anger. Write out your feelings, your hurt, your disappointment, your hatred, whatever it is you got bottled up inside of you, write that out!

Don’t stop until it’s all out. You’ll know when it’s all out because you will breathe this BIG huge sigh of relief and almost feel like you can walk on water. I kid you not. That’s how good of a medicine a truth letter is.

Please don’t send it. Burn it, shred it, delete it, destroy it or keep it but just don’t send it. That pretty much is opening a door for more anger, hurt, hate and other toxic stuff.

4 Meditate

If you can calm yourself down enough to sit still and do this, Kudos to you. Lately I find myself meditating a lot more than usual.

Sometimes I just need to chill out and calm down and nothing can do this better than meditation.  I do prefer the guided ones with soft music and some guy telling me to calm down and breathe.

I love those guys. They don’t know it, but I do.

These help to quiet my mind and the turmoil going on in there and help me to centre and refocus on what matters most, me.

Are you feeling sad or dealing with depression?

Just because I feel sad sometimes that doesn’t necessarily mean I am depressed. People who suffer with depression know the difference. If you aren’t sure, please go see and talk to your doctor or a professional about it.

Don’t forget to check out the link above for more information and help in dealing with depression.

There is always help available, even free hotlines, to those who have mental illnesses and depression.

Feeling sad is simply how we feel at the moment and it is something that we can somewhat easily deal with and let go of. Depression on the other hand is not that cut and dry. Understand the difference.

In closing…

So you see, even though we can all agree laughter is good medicine, it’s got some tough competition. Next time you are feeling sad, just remember, it’s just a feeling and it will pass with a little help from you.

Ohmmm, ohmmm, ohmmm…..phew, ok, much better now!

Peace and Love
